Waste of Prime Real Estate

Category:Data Design

Waste of Prime Real Estate

Stephen Few summarised the most common mistakes in dashboard design.  One of them is arranging the data poorly.  The goal is not simply to make the dashboard look good, but to :

  1. Arrange the data in a manner that fits the way it is used.

  2. The most important data to be prominent

  3. Data require attention standout.

  4. Data arranged and designed to encourage comparisons.

Here is an example (as illustrated by Stephen Few) that shows the poor arrangement of data.  The most common one he called 'Waste of Prime Real Estate', the most prominent postion on the dashboard (the top left) is used to display the vendor's logo and navigational controls.  I marked other poor data arrangements by yells circles.

Let me know if you would like to know more or have any questions.
